Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of daruju (Acanthus ilicifolius L.) leaf flour on cholesterol, triglyceride and abdominal fat of broiler chickens. This study used 100 broiler chickens aged 1 day and analyzed the data in a completely randomized design with treatment 0, 1, 2, 3 4 and 5% addition of daruju leaf flour in commercial feed. Each treatment was repeated 5 times and all chickens were kept for 42 days in a cage. The results of this study indicate that the percentage of abdominal fat given a concentration of 4-5% daruju leaf flour is significantly (P <0.05) lower than the percentage of abdominal fat given a concentration of 3%, 2%, 1% and 0%. Cholesterol levels that were given a concentration of 5% daruju leaf flour were significantly (P <0.05) lower than cholesterol levels that were given concentrations of 4%, 3%, 2%, 1% and 0%. The levels of triglycerides given a concentration of 5% daruju leaf flour were significantly (P <0.05) lower than those of triglycerides which were given concentrations of 4%, 3%, 2%, 1% and 0%. Decreased levels of triglycerides, cholesterol and abdominal fat in broilers fed with daruju leaf flour are influenced by the presence of secondary metabolite compounds namely flavonoids and saponins. This study concluded that the administration of daruju (Acanthus ilicifolius L.) leaf flour as a dietary supplement with a concentration of 4-5% can reduce levels of triglycerides, cholesterol and abdominal fat in broiler chickens.
