Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the comfort levels of carbon-plated and non-carbon-plated running shoes on asphalt and gravel tracks. It is driven by the rapid innovation in running shoe technology and the lack of data regarding their comfort effectiveness across different terrains. The research employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design. Data were collected through observations and comfort questionnaires from 20 respondents (80 data points), analyzed using the Two-Way ANOVA test. Variables included shoe type and track type as independent variables, and comfort level as the dependent variable. The results show a significant interaction effect between shoe type and track type on comfort (p < 0.001). Carbon-plated shoes offer the highest comfort on asphalt but show a drastic decline on gravel due to the plate's stiffness, which is less adaptive to uneven surfaces. Conversely, non-carbon-plated shoes perform better on gravel due to their flexibility in distributing pressure. This study recommends carbon-plated shoes for solid surfaces like asphalt and non-carbon-plated shoes for rougher terrains like gravel.
