Abstract

This study aims to find out the stereotypes and adaptation strategies of Papuan students at Semarang State University (UNNES). The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and literature studies. Kim's (1998) intercultural adaptation theory was used to analyze the influence of stereotypes on individual adaptability. The results of the study show that Papuan students face negative stereotypes related to academics, adaptability, and financial management. To overcome this, they form internal communities as social support, although sometimes reinforce stereotypes. Stereotypes have emerged due to differences in language, physical form, and academic background since the existence of the Affirmation Program (2016). Papuan students develop adaptation strategies in the form of cultural adaptation, based on educational differences, and cross-cultural adaptation that focuses on adaptability and language within the UNNES environment. It can be concluded that the stereotypes that develop in society arise due to differences in language, physical form, and academic differences that have existed since the affirmation program was established.
