Darmo Hospital in Surabaya is a historical building that embodies both historical significance and distinctive colonial architectural design by G.C. Citroen. This study aims to identify the relationship between the building’s architecture and its role in shaping Surabaya’s city identity. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through field observations, documentation of architectural elements, and literature studies, focusing on aspects of memory, distinctiveness, and design. The findings reveal that Darmo Hospital not only symbolizes the adaptation of colonial architecture to the tropical climate but also preserves the collective memory of residents as a monumental building marking the development of the Darmo area. The authenticity of its design, which has been maintained to the present day, reinforces its function as an urban artifact that plays a significant role in the historical dynamics and identity of Surabaya.
